How the Two Degrees Differ
UK: a focused, professional degree
From the first week you study biomedical subjects only: anatomy and physiology, cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, haematology, clinical chemistry, histopathology and medical genetics. If the course is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), it covers the academic part of qualifying as a Biomedical Scientist registered with the HCPC, the protected title used in NHS and private clinical labs.
There are three types of accredited UK degree:
- Standard BSc (3 years): after graduating you take a trainee role in an IBMS-approved lab and complete the Registration Training Portfolio to become registered.
